Pune’s lone women cueist is a World Champion in Billiards & Team Snooker

16/02/2019

She is World’s No 1 player in both Snooker (Team 2013) & Billiards (2015)

A resident of Clover Heights society in Wanowrie, she started as a leisure game & it soon became her passion and she followed it with full heart. She began her training under her father at CME and then her first coach Satish Amarnath; a renowned National and International Billiards and Snooker player who taught her the basics of the game.

She was in her Class X when she first learnt this game and since then she has never looked back. She has played both the games simultaneously and has won the No. 1 positions in the World. She currently practices at the Billiards Room in the National Academy for Defence Financial  Management (NADFM), Pune. The Director of the academy has been very supportive.

Arantxa, who is now 29, says both the games have different set of rules and methodologies. There have been times when both the games were held at the same venues with short intervals. That switch sometimes has been difficult but I am blessed to have the skills.

TREMENDOUS FAMILY SUPPORT

Her father (Retd) Colonel  E J Sanchis, is an alumnus of NDA and IIT Kharagpur.  He took early retirement so that she could devote time to her properly. He says, “I have attended almost all her tournaments. I feel this game needs patience, mental skills and monetary support.” She has an elder sister who is now in Canada and mother.

PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS

She has achieved distinction in her Bachelors in Engineering course from St. Francis Institute of Technology, Mumbai. She is the reciepient of the Chancellors Gold Medal of Symbiosis International University for standing first among all MBA students, while she studied at SIMS. She is presently working with Credit Suisse in Product Control and they support her with leaves to attend  tournaments. She devotes most of her free time to her game and loves to read books and listen to music. An avid swimmer, she takes a lot of cues from other games to strategise her moves.

In addition for two years during her playing years she was sponsored for International events by Pune based builder Surendra Sanas.

Her father Col E J Sanchis says our country has abundant talent but we need international standard facilities.
