Fadnavis announced measures to prevent future accidents, including AI-powered cameras and cancelling 70 pub licenses, following the tragic Porsche crash in Pune.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the Maharashtra Assembly during its Monsoon Session and informed about the cancellation of 70 pub licenses in Pune. He emphasized the need for the installation of AI-powered cameras in eateries to enhance monitoring and safety.

He provided detailed updates on the horrific Porsche crash in Pune that resulted in the deaths of two techies.

The incident, which took place on May 19, involved a 17-year-old boy driving a Porsche and crashing into a two-wheeler, killing two 24-year-old IT professionals, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta. The teenager was seen on security footage drinking with friends in two pubs before the accident.

Fadnavis, who also serves as the state Home Minister, detailed the steps being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

Fadnavis emphasized the need for AI-enabled cameras to monitor establishment closing times, verify customer ages upon entry, and ensure age proof is checked. “If patrons are allowed entry without proof, action will be taken,” he stated.

He defended the Pune Police Commissioner’s actions, describing them as proactive, and outlined the legal process following the crash. Initially charged under Section 304(a) of the IPC (causing death by negligence), the case was later updated to include Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) after recommendations from officials.

Fadnavis highlighted the police’s swift actions to prevent evidence tampering. He also spoke about several arrests made, including the arrest of a doctor involved in a blood sample swap. The police also conducted DNA tests to confirm the identity of the driver after the initial alcohol test returned negative. There was also an investigation that revealed that the Porsche was travelling at 110 kmph when the brakes were applied.

Arrests made included the teen’s parents and grandfather, who were implicated for their roles in the incident. The teen’s father was charged for allowing his underage son to drive, while the bar operator and the grandfather were also held accountable.

However, the Bombay High Court recently ordered the teen’s release, citing the Juvenile Justice Act, which requires treating minors separately from adults in legal proceedings.
