A first-year student at IIT Bombay has stirred up controversy by criticizing the institute’s teaching and grading methods in a post on Reddit.

The student, known as ‘dengo302005’ on the platform, expressed disappointment with the perception of IIT Bombay as a “golden gateway to supreme education.” Instead, the student described their experience as lacking enthusiasm compared to their JEE days, citing issues with the grading system’s subjectivity and its impact on education.

The post has gained traction amid ongoing discussions about IIT Bombay’s placement rates, with recent reports indicating that a significant percentage of students have yet to secure jobs. While the institute has countered these claims with exit surveys, the student’s critique has sparked debate on social media about the quality of education at prestigious institutions like IIT Bombay.

Titled “IIT Rant,” the post reflects the student’s disillusionment with the educational experience at India’s premier institute, highlighting concerns about subjective grading and a perceived gap between expectations and reality.

“I am doing civil in an old IIT and I feel the same, I don’t even remember why I used to study during JEE times. Idk whom it was that I wanted to prove my worth. Everything feels very useless all of a sudden idk why… and what I should do about it,” one user commented.

“Try not to get disenchanted with the system. Try putting in your best and then leave the rest. Relax and be cool. Later in life, when you look back, you will relish these memories. The entire process makes you mentally stronger to handle much bigger setbacks. Try lasting thru it and simply try enjoying it. Don’t take it so hard. You will be fine,” said another.

Users from different colleges shared their own experiences and disenchantment from the education system.

The student’s candid remarks have prompted reflection and discussion within the IIT community and beyond, shedding light on broader issues surrounding education and academic standards.
