Mumbai: The government issued an advisory to the Director General of Police to take action against deep fake videos, clips, photos or other types of content that are created and circulated on social media / digital media during the Lok Sabha elections. Strict action will be taken by the government to curb these malpractices

‘Deep fake’ content, generated through advanced techniques like Photoshop, Machine Learning (ML), or Artificial Intelligence (AI), poses a significant threat during elections. These falsified materials, whether portraying fabricated scenarios or altering genuine media, can deceive viewers into believing misinformation, potentially defaming candidates, and political parties, or distorting election issues.

The government’s intervention underscores the seriousness of tackling the misuse of technology to manipulate public opinion and influence electoral outcomes. To ensure a fair and transparent electoral process, authorities are adamant about taking decisive action against individuals or groups responsible for creating and disseminating ‘deep fake’ content.

Instructions have been relayed to the Director General of Police by the state government, signalling a proactive approach through law enforcement agencies to address this growing concern. Additionally, the Election Commission has incorporated guidelines to combat misinformation, further reinforcing efforts to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
