Srinagar to Host Major Event

June 21, 2024: The world will celebrate the 10th International Yoga Day on June 21. This special day aims to highlight the many benefits of yoga for physical, mental, and spiritual health. Yoga, a word derived from the Sanskrit root “yuj,” means “to join” or “to unite.” It symbolizes the union of mind and body, thoughts and actions, and humans with nature.

Prime Minister’s Address to the UNGA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi first proposed International Yoga Day in September 2014 during his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He stated, “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action… a holistic approach [that] is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world, and nature.” Following this, the UNGA declared June 21 as International Yoga Day on December 11, 2014.

Global Significance

Yoga has grown tremendously in popularity, with millions worldwide practising it to improve their health and mental well-being. It goes beyond physical exercises, incorporating breathing techniques and meditation. These practices help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while enhancing flexibility, strength, balance, and endurance.

Celebrations Around the World

Prime Minister Modi will lead the celebrations from Srinagar, participating in a yoga session and addressing the gathering. The UN Headquarters in New York will also host events to mark this day. The global celebrations underscore yoga’s universal appeal and its role in promoting a healthier lifestyle.
