Heavy rains hit Maharashtra’s Thane and nearby Palghar districts overnight, prompting authorities to issue a ‘red alert’ for Palghar on Thursday morning due to the forecast of very heavy showers, officials reported.

Flooding of the Surya River in Palghar caused a bridge in Manor to become submerged, disrupting movement between Wada and Manor, according to district disaster management cell chief Vivekanand Kadam, as reported by PTI. He added that the high tide worsened the situation.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red alert’ for Palghar at 10 am, predicting very heavy showers over the next three hours, according to Kadam.

He stated that the heavy rains have forced the suspension of search operations for an excavator and its operator by various agencies at Sasun Navghar in Palghar.

On May 29, an excavator and its operator were buried in a tunnel at an upcoming water project site after the soil caved in.

Another official reported that Thane city and district also experienced heavy rainfall overnight. Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Thane Municipal Corporation’s disaster management cell, stated that the city received 35.51 mm of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Thursday.

He mentioned there were isolated incidents of tree branches falling in the city. From 8:30 am to 9:30 am on Thursday, the city received 26.42 mm of rainfall, according to the official. He added that Thane city has recorded 228.93 mm of rainfall this monsoon season, compared to 50.70 mm during the same period last year.
