Mumbai: In a welcome move for commuters, the traffic hours on the south-bound carriageway of the Mumbai Coastal Road have been extended starting Wednesday.

The entry point at Rajani Patel Chowk, commonly known as Lotus junction, along with entry and exit at Amarson Garden junction and the exit at Marine Drive, will now be accessible from 7 am to 11 pm, all seven days of the week. Previously, vehicle entry from these junctions in Worli was restricted to 8 am to 8 pm on weekdays, with no traffic allowed on weekends.

With the new timings, motorists can now access the coastal road for 16 hours a day, providing greater flexibility for commuters throughout the week. However, the entry from Bindu Madhav Thackeray junction in Worli will maintain its existing hours from 8 am to 5 pm, according to traffic officials.

The decision to extend traffic hours follows a request from the contractor, citing the advanced stage of major mechanical installations in the north-bound tunnel. This extension will facilitate real-time testing and ensure the adequacy of various systems.

It’s important to note that speed limits have been enforced on the coastal road for safety purposes: 80 km/h on the straight road, 60 km/h in the tunnel, and 40 km/h at turning points. Additionally, entry for heavy vehicles, trailers, mixers, tractors, and other specified vehicles is restricted, except for essential services like BEST and ST buses, goods carrier vehicles, and passenger-carrying vehicles.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Traffic) Pradnya Jedge emphasized the importance of compliance, stating that legal action will be taken against motorists and passengers found stopping their vehicles on the coastal road for photography or videography.

The completion of the entire Mumbai Coastal Road, expected by June, promises to further alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity for residents and commuters in the city.
