Amidst the persistent menace of stray dogs causing distress and harm to Pune’s residents, a proactive civic action committee is taking shape to confront the issue head-on. Social activist Vivek Kashikar has stepped forward to announce this crucial initiative aimed at finding effective solutions to the stray dog problem.

Sharing his first hand experiences, Kashikar remarked, “Residing in Bhukum, I witness the significant disturbances caused by street dogs to our community. Despite repeated complaints to the municipality, the recurring cycle of dog vaccinations and return to the area persists. Regulations dictate that street dogs cannot be relocated, leaving the decision-making power solely with Parliament to implement changes such as establishing shelter homes or relocating them to appropriate habitats.”

The presence of stray dogs on the streets poses a tangible threat to citizens, with incidents ranging from intruding into homes, chasing pedestrians, to causing physical injuries. Their relentless barking disrupts the peace of residents during night time, and the prevalence of dog bites, particularly among children, contributes to the alarming number of rabies-related fatalities annually across India.

Despite the widespread suffering inflicted by stray dogs, existing laws pose significant obstacles to their removal from the neighborhood, and governmental as well as social organizations have fallen short in addressing this pressing issue. Moreover, the judicial system’s reluctance to intervene on behalf of petitioners seeking resolution further exacerbates the challenge.

In light of the urgency surrounding the matter, concerned citizens have united to advocate for parliamentary action. The formation of a dedicated civic action committee stands as a pivotal step towards addressing this long-neglected yet critical concern.

Hence, it is through concerted efforts and effective advocacy at the parliamentary level that tangible solutions can be realized, ensuring the safety and well-being of Pune’s citizens and beyond.
