In a decisive move against unchecked tree cutting in the guise of development, the Forest Department has levied a substantial fine of eight lakh rupees on a developer found guilty of chopping down 800 trees without proper authorization in Mulshi taluka. The stringent enforcement underscores the gravity of the offense and marks a crucial step towards safeguarding the region’s precious green cover.

The incident unfolded in the Nere area of Mulshi taluka, prompting action from the Vasundhara Social Upliftment Tree Planting and Tree Conservation Co-operative Society, which promptly filed a complaint with the Mulshi Forest Department office in March. The complaint highlighted the illegal felling of 400 trees planted in 2016, as well as mature trees within the institute’s premises.

In response, Forest Division Officer Pragya Bansode and Forest Conservator Pandurang Kopanar conducted an on-site investigation, revealing the extent of the damage caused by the unauthorized tree cutting operation. The complaint implicated multiple individuals, leading to the issuance of notices for further inquiry.

Subsequently, the accused voluntarily appeared at the Forest Range Office, admitting to their involvement in the crime and expressing readiness to comply with government regulations. Acting swiftly, the Forest Department collected the prescribed penalty of Rs 8 lakh from the perpetrators, reinforcing the message that environmental transgressions will face severe consequences.

This proactive stance by the Forest Department serves as a deterrent against unauthorized tree felling and reaffirms the commitment to preserving the region’s invaluable natural resources. The imposition of a significant fine sends a clear signal that environmental preservation is non-negotiable, promoting responsible stewardship of forests and ecosystems.
