The Khulewadi area in the Vadgaon Sheri Constituency of Pune has been grappling with a severe water shortage for the past two weeks, causing distress among residents. Despite persistent appeals to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to regulate water supply, no tangible solution has been forthcoming.

Former corporator Bhaiyyasaheb Jadhav, in a bold demonstration of frustration, descended into a pit dug for a water wall construction and vehemently criticized the municipal authorities for their inaction. He even threatened to continue his protest by staying in the pit until the water supply was restored. However, upon assurances from municipal officials that the issue would be addressed within eight days, Jadhav concluded his protest.

The water scarcity in Pune this year has been exacerbated by a deficit in rainfall, resulting in inadequate storage in the city’s reservoirs. Despite assurances of sufficient water reserves until mid-July, the mismanagement of water distribution has become apparent, with both urban and suburban areas facing shortages.

While efforts have been made to extend water supply to newly incorporated villages, the municipal corporation has failed to ensure consistent supply even in developed areas like Kharadi. Numerous complaints have been lodged by residents of Thite Vasti, Thite Nagar, Chaudhary Vasti, and other areas, yet responses from the Municipal Corporation have been lacking.

The situation has become so dire that residents are considering resorting to purchasing water tankers, which imposes an additional financial burden. In Khulewadi, the water crisis has reached a critical point, with citizens enduring a fortnight without water supply.

Former Corporator Bhaiyyasaheb Jadhav lamented the lack of attention from municipal officials towards the plight of Khulewadi residents. Despite assurances of follow-up actions, tangible results were absent, prompting his protest action. While officials have pledged to restore water within eight days, the ordeal underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions to Pune’s water woes.
