Pune’s eagerly awaited Metro rail project is nearing another milestone, as officials announce plans to commence underground services on both lines from Civil Court to Swargate by mid-June. Following successful trial runs along the route, authorities express optimism about the project’s progress.

“The Pune Metro has conducted trial runs on the second line of the underground metro rail service, and they were successful,” stated a Pune Metro rail official. He further noted that work on the underground metro stations is progressing swiftly.

“We are hopeful that the underground metro rail service from Civil Court to Swargate will be operational by June 15,” the official remarked, highlighting the impending conclusion of the election code of conduct in June. The original deadline for launching operations from Civil Court to Swargate was March 31.

“However, due to incomplete work and the imposition of the election code of conduct, the deadline was extended,” he explained. Once the underground service commences, it will mark the completion of phase one of the project, connecting Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi.

While the Vanaz to Ramwadi route is fully operational, the PCMC to Civil Court route is partly functional, awaiting the completion of the underground stretch to Swargate. The central government has approved the extension of the route from PCMC to Nigdi as part of phase one, while the proposal to extend the route from Swargate to Katraj awaits approval.

Furthermore, the Pune Metro is focusing on enhancing feeder services from Metro stations to nearby locations, ensuring seamless connectivity for commuters.

“There has been a positive response to the feeder service to Pune airport from Metro stations. We are exploring additional routes and conducting trials on an experimental basis,” noted a Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) officer.
