Shravan Hardikar, the Managing Director of Maha Metro, highlighted this exciting development at a recent real estate event organized by Credtech Knowledge Federation stating that in the next five years, the Metro system in the city is set to expand across all corridors, greatly improving last-mile connectivity by boosting last-mile connectivity with most stations being just 5-10 minutes apart.

Hardikar emphasized that a city’s value lies in the services it offers to its citizens, and the expansion of the Metro network will undoubtedly enhance the quality of life for Pune’s residents. Drawing parallels with London’s extensive transportation system, which boasts 400km of underground lines and serves 1.5 crore riders, he stressed the importance of efficient public transport.

He pointed out that Pune’s development is surpassing its road infrastructure, with vehicle registrations projected to outpace road construction within three years. To address growing traffic issues, Hardikar urged all stakeholders to work together to provide holistic solutions.

Regarding last-mile connectivity, he questioned whether citizens are willing to utilize alternative modes of transport, such as walking or taking the bus. He highlighted Delhi’s adoption of e-rickshaws, which transport 75 lakh people daily to and from nearby Metro stations, as an example of innovative solutions to transportation challenges.

Hardikar therefore emphasized that the decisions made regarding public transport will ultimately determine the value it adds to the city. With the Metro set to saturate all corridors in the near future, Pune’s residents can look forward to improved accessibility and enhanced urban mobility.
