Pune, April 16, 2024 – The persistent water crisis plaguing villages within the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) shows no sign of abating, despite efforts to bolster water tanker rounds. Residents in various villages are grappling with acute shortages, enduring days with scant water supply as tankers struggle to meet demand.

Mohini Nausupe, a homemaker from Fursungi, shared her family’s predicament, revealing, “Our colony relies on tankers thrice in a 10-day period. When the second tanker fails to arrive, it poses a significant problem for our family of seven. Tap water, trickling in once every 4-5 days, is solely reserved for drinking and cooking.”

Among the 34 villages under PMC jurisdiction, Undri, Fursungi, Pisoli, and Manjri emerge as the hardest hit by the water crisis, exacerbated by scorching summer temperatures.

Nandkishor Jagtap, Head of the Water Supply and Pumping Department at PMC, acknowledged the challenges, stating, “With a limited number of suppliers, we are gradually ramping up tanker rounds. We have allocated an additional 200 trips of water tankers for merged villages. A report was sought from areas such as Undri, Pisoli, Phursungi, Manjari where the water shortfall is noticed.”

In response to the escalating situation, the PMC Commissioner announced plans to augment tanker frequency by 200, escalating the total rounds to 1400 per cycle, up from the previous 1200. This decision aims to alleviate the strain on water resources and provide vital relief to affected communities.
