Pune is a hub for youth, especially for students who come to the cultural capital of Maharashtra from across the state to prepare for multiple competitive examinations. Upon bagging good results, these students are frequently seen celebrating by applying gulal, bursting fireworks and blasting music on DJ.

The Pune Police, particularly those from the Peth regions, have issued a notice cautioning students against engaging in such revelry after carefully seeing the upheaval this is creating in the community.

The police have put a notice in the Peth areas stating, “Students in competitive exams have been observed repeatedly using gulal, firecrackers, etc. after results. As this is causing a lot of trouble to nearby residents, they have made repeated complaints to the police. Also, some students have been called to the police station and are being counselled by our officers.

“While we are proud and happy of your success in the competitive examination/s, we humbly appeal to all students appearing for competitive exams to celebrate their success with a bouquet or something. Henceforth, the use of gulal, firecrackers, etc. will result in criminal charges. The concerned students should note that the police administration has put up boards with such messages,” it reads further.

A Sadashiv Peth resident, expressed her grievance and said that every month one or the other student clears these competitive exams and they all take to the streets to celebrate, which hinders the peace of the surroundings.

A shop owner in Navi Peth, also voiced his troubles and said that police have had to step in to tame the grand celebrations these students have after clearing exams.

On the other hand, another who is studying for the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) exam, expressed his disappointment in the notice issued and narrated an incident about one of his friends clearing the MPSC last year and becoming an officer himself. He added that he understands that the celebrations should not be harmful to anyone but it is a means of displaying joy for their achievements.

The Competitive Examination Coordination Committee too has condemned the Pune police’s actions and stated that it is disgraceful for them to deliver such a warning to upcoming officers.
