Pune: An email claiming bombs had been planted at Sahyadri Hospitals, a chain of multispecialty healthcare hubs in western Maharashtra, prompted the city police to conduct an elaborate search at four of the hospital’s units late on Monday night. The threat was a hoax.

The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) team conducted a thorough search but found nothing suspicious. The Mumbai cyber police were investigating the source of the email that was first received by Sahyadri Hospital’s Mumbai branch, police said, adding an entry was made in the general register of the Bharati Vidyapeeth police.

Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said, “An email threat was received by various hospitals across the state. We verified the information by conducting searches in some Pune hospitals. It was a hoax.”

A BDDS inspector said, “We pressed five teams to conduct searches at four Sahyadri hospital units in Deccan, Kothrud, Yerawada, and Faraskhana and the Bharati Vidyapeeth hospital.”

A senior inspector said the email landed in the inbox of Sahyadri Hospital’s Mumbai branch on Monday morning. The IT cell of the hospital spotted it late evening. The Mumbai branch then sent alerts to all their units, and the Sahyadri hospital in Deccan Gymkhana contacted us.

An inquiry revealed the emails were sent by an unidentified person from outside India. “We have written to the city’s cyber police to trace the source and submit a report,” adding that the email did not specify the names of the hospitals in Pune.
