In response to rising criminal activities, Pune has increased its police presence by deploying 50 additional vehicles and 150 extra personnel across the city. This initiative aims to strengthen security in identified “hot spots” and reduce incidents of theft and violence.

Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar announced that crime-prone areas will now experience an increased police presence. The deployment covers locations within the jurisdiction of twelve police stations, with patrols operating from 6 pm to 6 am. The Social Security Department is overseeing these patrols, which also include ‘Morning Walk’ locations from 5:30 am to 7 am.

The decision follows a noticeable rise in theft and violence, including robberies, mobile phone thefts, and assaults. Recent incidents, such as an elderly citizen falling victim to theft, have prompted this action. Areas like Khadki, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Sinhgad Road, Warje, Parvati, Viman Nagar, Yerwada, Chaturshringi, Chandannagar, Kondhwa, Hadapsar, and Wanowrie have been identified as high-risk zones requiring special attention from the police and Crime Branch.

Efforts to ensure women’s safety are also being intensified. A list of 71 locations sensitive to women’s safety concerns has been compiled, and a government-ordered committee will focus on implementing necessary security measures. Women and girls affected by harassment and rape can now provide statements via phone, ensuring their comfort and safety during the process. Additionally, 32 locations with frequent theft incidents are under review for enhanced security measures.

At a recent Crime Meeting chaired by Police Commissioner Kumar, discussions covered recent religious disputes and strategies to increase patrols, combat illegal activities, secure hospitals and clinics, and address women’s safety issues. Preparations are also in progress for the upcoming pilgrimage of Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj, with increased security measures planned to ensure a safe and incident-free event.
