Three remote polling stations in Pune district are set to utilize ham radio technology to transmit important voting information.

These polling centers, situated in Panchale Budruk, Phatan near Dimbhe dam, and Phulawade, all within Ambegaon taluka of Shirur constituency, lack cell phone network coverage, rendering conventional communication methods ineffective.

District Collector Suhas Diwase highlighted the challenges, noting that even walkie-talkies were impractical due to the treacherous terrain and lack of network connectivity. Satellite phones and runner systems were also deemed inadequate for the task. Consequently, the decision was made to employ ham radios, a technology previously utilized for disaster management in Maharashtra but now adapted for electoral purposes for the first time in the state.

Diwase outlined the setup, emphasizing the importance of pre-configured parameters for communication. Similar to police wireless units, ham radios operate on specific frequencies, facilitated by antennas, cable networks, power supplies, and backups to ensure reliable communication. This initiative underscores the commitment to inclusivity in the electoral process, ensuring that even the most remote areas can participate effectively.

With ham radio technology bridging the communication gap, voters in these regions can rest assured that their voices will be heard.
As Maharashtra pioneers this approach, it sets a precedent for other regions facing similar challenges. By harnessing innovative solutions like ham radio technology, authorities can uphold the integrity and accessibility of democratic processes, ensuring every citizen’s right to vote is safeguarded, regardless of geographical barriers.
