The Pune city police’s traffic department is taking action against abandoned vehicles left on public roads, causing traffic congestion and parking issues.

With around 800 vehicles lying neglected, Commissioner of Police, Amitesh Kumar, has directed the traffic police to paste notices on these vehicles, urging owners to remove them within seven days or face towing. Most of these vehicles have been involved in accidents, left broken down, and unrepaired for a considerable time.

Over the past week, the traffic police have been actively tracing and tagging these vehicles, resulting in the removal of approximately 214 abandoned vehicles from various parts of the city, including Swargate, Satara road, Sahakar Nagar, Katraj, and others.

The initiative extends to areas like Deccan Gymkhana, Shivajinagar, Yerwada, Viman Nagar, Chandan Nagar, Hadapsar, Wanawadi, and Kondhwa, where the team has identified vehicles parked illegally on roadsides and in public parking areas.
Local area traffic police have identified and tagged 800 such vehicles within their jurisdiction, giving owners a week to remove them or face legal action.
If owners fail to claim their vehicles within the stipulated time, the traffic police will tow them to designated divisions, serving another notice based on the registration number. Failure to respond will result in legal proceedings against the owners.
However, some vehicles in extremely poor condition require immediate repair and cannot be towed away. There are at least 145 such vehicles, which, if damaged or exceed 15 years of age without a green certificate from the Regional Transport department, Pune, must be either repaired promptly by owners or undergo the legal process of auctioning or scrapping.

Commissioner Kumar emphasized the importance of this initiative in maintaining traffic flow and ensuring road safety for all residents. The active involvement of the traffic police aims to alleviate traffic congestion and parking concerns, ultimately contributing to a smoother and safer commuting experience in Pune.
