Pune experienced a sweltering Friday characterized by soaring temperatures and oppressive humidity, leaving residents struggling to cope with the uncomfortable conditions. The mercury hovered between 38.6°C and 40.6°C, with the real-feel temperature even higher due to elevated moisture levels in the air.

While Delhi witnessed similar temperatures, the difference in discomfort was attributed to significantly higher humidity levels in Pune, reaching over 50-60% in various areas of the city by Friday morning, a substantial increase from the previous day’s 30-40%. Despite the absence of rainfall, the surge in humidity made outdoor activities unbearable for many residents.

Residents across Pune and its environs reported a noticeable surge in humidity levels on Friday. In Shivajinagar, relative humidity spiked from 48% to 61%, accompanied by a slight increase in the minimum temperature. Similarly, Pashan recorded a 12% jump in humidity, while Lohegaon experienced a dramatic rise from 26% to 56%. Chinchwad, Lavale, and Magarpatta also saw significant increases in humidity, indicating the onset of muggy weather conditions.

Medha Khole, head of the weather forecasting division at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune, attributed the discomfort to a rise in humidity levels caused by moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea. Cloud cover during the afternoon contributed to the retention of surface heat, leading to higher night temperatures.

The surge in humidity and rising temperatures serve as a precursor to potential rain activity in Pune, emphasizing the need for residents to brace themselves for further fluctuations in weather conditions.
