Pune is currently experiencing hot and humid conditions, with temperatures reaching around 39-40 degrees Celsius. While this temperature range is not uncommon for the city, the combination of high humidity and prolonged sun exposure poses risks of heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke and dehydration.

According to experts, the moisture-bearing winds from the Arabian Sea, flowing into Maharashtra and Pune via Gujarat, contribute to the stifling sensation in the city. Very light to light rain likely over Pune in next 72 hr.

Although Pune may not technically be in a heat wave, the humidity exacerbates the situation, making it uncomfortable for residents. Heat stroke occurs when the body loses moisture rapidly and is not replenished. Symptoms include high body temperature, a rapid pulse, heat rashes, and exhaustion. If left untreated, heat stroke can be fatal.

To mitigate the risks, it’s essential to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, particularly between 11 am and 4 pm, when temperatures are highest.

Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at the IMD, explains that while Pune may not be in a heat wave, the combination of humidity and high temperature poses risks of heat-related illnesses. He emphasizes the importance of frequent hydration to prevent dehydration, as the quick evaporation of moisture from the body can lead to severe illness.

The state government has issued guidelines to hospitals to report cases of heat stroke, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. With humidity in the air, individuals may not realize they are dehydrated, underscoring the need for vigilance and proactive measures to stay safe.

To stay safe amid Pune’s hot and humid conditions, residents are advised to:

1. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day.

2. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during peak hours.

3. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing to stay cool.

4. Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

5. Recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses and seek medical attention if necessary.

By following these precautions, individuals can reduce their risk of heat-related illnesses and stay safe during Pune’s hot and humid weather conditions.
