The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made an important decision to streamline PhD admissions through the National Eligibility Test (NET) for the academic years 2024 to 2025. This move aims to eliminate the hassle of multiple entrance exams, offering candidates a smoother path to their doctoral dreams.

According to UGC Chairperson M. Jagdish Kumar, the decision follows recommendations from an expert committee. Under the new system, NET scores will play a significant role in admissions, remaining valid for one year. The test will be held twice a year in June and December, opening doors for candidates aspiring for Junior Research Fellowships and Assistant Professor positions.

“This decision offers students greater flexibility and opportunity,” says Kumar. “They can now utilize their NET scores to apply for PhD programs across various institutions.”

Starting from the 2024-2025 admission sessions, universities are encouraged to adopt the NET for PhD admissions. The UGC notification outlines three categories for eligibility:

  1. Admission to PhD with Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and appointment as Assistant Professor.
  2. Admission to Ph.D. without JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor.
  3. Admission to PhD programs only.

Candidates’ NET results will be declared in percentages alongside marks obtained, facilitating their use for PhD or Assistant Professor admissions. For those qualifying under categories two and three, 70% weightage will be given to test scores and 30% to the interview or viva.

“The combined merit of NET marks and interview performance will determine PhD admissions,” the notification states, signalling a more straightforward process for aspiring scholars.

With this revolutionary step, UGC aims to streamline the PhD admission process, empowering students and universities alike.
