Another Pregnant Woman Detected with Zika in Erandwane: Sixth Case Reported in Pune
PMC intensifies surveillance as Zika virus cases rise in Erandwane and Mundhwa.

Pune has reported its sixth case of Zika virus infection. A 35-year-old pregnant woman from Ganeshnagar in Erandwane tested positive. This is the second Zika infection detected in a pregnant woman within the city, according to health department officials.
The acting chief medical officer of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Health Department, stated that out of 12 samples collected from Ganeshnagar, seven were from pregnant women, and two have tested positive for the virus.
The latest case follows a report on Sunday of a 28-year-old pregnant woman from Erandwane who was also diagnosed with Zika. Despite being six months pregnant, she shows no symptoms, as confirmed by, Assistant Medical Officer of Health, PMC. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that Zika infection in pregnant women can cause microcephaly and other severe birth defects.
Due to these risks, the PMC has intensified surveillance in the affected areas of Erandwane and Mundhwa, where previous cases were reported. The health department has also requested additional sample collection from Kodrevasti. However officials emphasized that there is no need for panic as containment measures are in place.
Among the 25 samples collected, 12 were from Erandwane, including seven from pregnant women, two of whom tested positive. The remaining 13 samples were from Mundhwa, with no positive cases reported among pregnant women. Preventive measures include anomaly scans for pregnant women and increased area surveillance.
The doctors noted that preventive actions were taken immediately after the case was reported, including inspecting overhead water tanks in Ganeshnagar. Fines were levied at identified mosquito breeding spots. Nearly 10,000 people have been surveyed, and teams visited 4,646 homes in Erandwane and Mundhwa. Mosquito breeding was identified in 161 houses. Fines totaling Rs 3,300, were charged.
As Zika virus cases continue to rise in Pune, the PMC is taking stringent measures to control the spread and protect the affected populations, especially pregnant women. The health department remains vigilant, conducting extensive surveillance and ensuring preventive measures are strictly enforced.
