President Droupadi Murmu announced a significant expansion of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme 

During her address to the joint sitting of Parliament in New Delhi, President Murmu has  announced that all citizens aged above 70 years will receive free medical treatment under the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)

President Murmu highlighted that the scheme currently benefits 55 crore beneficiaries across the country. She emphasized the scheme’s role in providing essential healthcare services to millions of families.

President Murmu also underscored the establishment of 25,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras nationwide, aimed at making affordable medicines accessible to the public. The centers play a crucial role in reducing healthcare costs for patients across different socio-economic backgrounds.

AB-PMJAY, which is recognized as the world’s largest publicly funded health insurance scheme. It offers comprehensive health coverage of Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalizations. Covering 12 crore families, the scheme ensures extensive healthcare access through empanelled hospitals under the Hospital Empanelment and Management (HEM) guidelines mandated by State Health Agencies (SHAs).

The announcement ensures that elderly citizens receive necessary medical care without financial burden and reinforces the government’s commitment to healthcare for all.
