Pani Puri is often regarded as the most popular street food. However, it also frequently ranks as one of the most unhygienic foods due to vendors serving it with their bare hands.

According to the latest report, this popular street food has also failed to meet the safety standards set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

A recent inspection by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India in Karnataka found that nearly 22% of pani puri samples collected statewide did not meet safety standards.

The FSSAI collected pani puri samples from 79 locations across Karnataka, including 49 from Bangalore, following numerous complaints about their quality. Of the 260 samples tested, 41 contained artificial colouring and potentially carcinogenic chemicals, making them unsafe for consumption. Another 18 samples were found to be of poor quality.

The FSSAI found that brilliant blue, sunset yellow, and tartrazine were the main chemicals failing street food safety standards. Health experts warn that excessive consumption of these can lead to stomach aches, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders.

Brilliant Blue FCF is a synthetic dye found in food, beverages, and cosmetics. Excessive consumption can lead to skin allergies, itching, and digestive issues, and may cause hyperactivity in children.

Sunset Yellow is another synthetic food dye that can cause allergic reactions and digestive discomfort. It may also worsen ADHD symptoms and cause hyperactivity in children. Regulatory bodies advise cautious consumption due to these potential risks.
