The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is targeting protein supplement powders and shakes lacking medical certification or making misleading claims, reported by sources.
Nearly 70% of India’s top 36 protein powders provided incorrect information, with some brands delivering only half of their claimed protein content. The crackdown by FSSAI follows a study revealing widespread false and misleading claims on protein powders sold in stores, online platforms, and gyms.
The crackdown could lead to bans on non-compliant products, as reported. The popularity of fitness has driven up prices of protein supplements on platforms like Healthkart and Amazon, where they sell for ₹2,000-6,800 for 2-3 kg jars.
The protein powder situation is concerning. A study found that nearly 70% of popular supplements in India had inaccurate protein information, with some brands delivering only half of their claimed content. The study also revealed that 14% contained harmful fungal aflatoxins, and 8% had pesticide residues.
The authors, clinical researchers from Rajagiri Hospital in Kerala and a US-based technology entrepreneur, highlighted that Indian-made herbal protein supplements often contain poor-quality ingredients, including botanicals harmful to the liver.
They stressed the necessity for strict regulation and safety studies before these supplements are marketed.
On the whole, implementation of strict regulations and conducting thorough safety studies prior to the sale of these supplements will ensure safety, reducing the risk of harmful side effects or contamination. It will aid quality control, boost consumer confidence, health benefits, and help mitigate potential risks associated with improper labelling, misleading claims, or undisclosed ingredients.
