Gujarat youngsters’ Thar SUVs trapped in sea during IG reel stunt: Here’s how police responded

24 June, 2024

A group of young people in Gujarat learned a dangerous lesson about social media stunts when their Mahindra Thar SUVs got stuck in the rising tide at Mundra seaside while filming a video for Instagram Reels.

The group aimed to highlight the off-road capabilities of their 4×4 SUVs by driving them in challenging conditions. However, the plan backfired as the high tide began to engulf their vehicles. A viral video shows the youngsters standing in the sea, struggling to drive their red and white Mahindra Thars out of the water. Despite their efforts, they couldn’t free the SUVs on their own. Local residents eventually helped pull the vehicles to safety.

The incident occurred early in the morning when the tide was rising, trapping the SUVs in the water. Thanks to the quick response of vigilant locals, a rescue operation was launched, and the vehicles were pulled back before the tide rose further. No injuries were reported, although one of the SUVs sustained engine damage due to water exposure. The Mundra Marine police intervened, seizing the two SUVs and initiating an investigation. Authorities are tracking down the owners using the vehicles’ registration numbers, and an FIR has been filed.

Driving near the seaside is fraught with dangers. High tides can quickly rise, trapping vehicles and making escape difficult. Soft sand near the water can cause vehicles to get stuck, and in this case, the heavy Mahindra Thar was no exception. Additionally, saltwater can cause severe engine damage, leading to costly repairs. Sudden waves pose the risk of pushing or flipping vehicles, and wet sand and seaweed can reduce tire traction, increasing the chance of losing control.

Social media users reacted to the video posted on X, with comments like:

“Wish they had not retrieved the cars. Could be life-saving,”

“If no person was at risk, the jeeps were best left in the lap of the sea.”
