IMD Predicts Improved Rainfall for Pune by Mid-Week Despite Current Dry Spell

Pune continues to experience minimal rainfall despite surrounding ghat regions receiving significant showers. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipates an improvement in the city’s rainfall situation around mid-week.

July 1, 2024

Pune recorded scant rainfall on Monday, with Shivajinagar receiving 0.7mm, Pashan 1.9mm, Lavale 2.5mm, and Lohegaon 1.2mm. These figures fall well below the moderate rainfall category, defined by the IMD as ranging from 15.6mm to 64.4mm per day.

A scientist in weather services at IMD-Pune attributed the disparity between the rainfall in the ghat areas and the city to the proximity of the offshore trough to the ghats and coastal areas. “The ghat areas are recording higher rainfall compared to the interior regions of Maharashtra because of their proximity to the offshore trough,” he explained. “As the clouds move inland, they lose much of their moisture content, resulting in reduced precipitation over interior regions.”

Over the past few days, Pune has seen mostly cloudy conditions or light drizzles. The scientist indicated that while heavy rain is not expected, light to moderate showers may occur from July 3-4. Rainfall data up to 5:30 PM on July 1 highlighted the contrast: Lonavla received 39.5mm of rainfall during the day, whereas urban areas like Koregaon Park only received 0.5mm. Other notable recordings included Malin with 11.5mm, Nimgiri with 4mm, Rajgurunagar and Talegaon with 3.5mm each, and Khed with 3mm.

As Pune awaits the anticipated improvement in rainfall, the IMD remains vigilant in monitoring weather patterns. The ongoing monsoon season continues to demonstrate the complex and varied nature of precipitation across India.
