Japan Airlines and a Coast Guard aircraft collided on the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, killing five people on board the Coast Guard aircraft, according to the nation’s transport minister.

An official said that the coast guard plane, they have been informed that the captain escaped and five people were confirmed dead. In the meantime, the Japan Airlines plane that had collided with a coast guard aircraft managed to save all 379 of its passengers and crew from the ensuing fire.

Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, directed concerned agencies to work together to quickly assess the damage.

The passenger plane may have collided with one of the Japan Coast Guard’s aircraft, and the agency said it was looking into the possibility. Following the crash, five of the six coast guard aircraft crew members who were missing were subsequently located.

The pilot was taken out of the aircraft. After the incident, all runways at Haneda airport have been closed.

The aircraft, an Airbus A-350 JAL flight 516 that took off from Shin Chitose airport, caught fire on the Haneda airport runway in Tokyo. After landing, it is said to have been struck by another aircraft, possibly a Japan Coast Guard aircraft.
