The state board is considering holding Class 10 and Class 12 examinations twice a year, starting next academic year. This change aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which suggests conducting class-wise exams for these grades.

On Tuesday, state board chairman Sharad Gosavi discussed this with the media after announcing the Class 12 Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) results. He noted that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has tested session-wise exams but is now considering twice-yearly exams instead.
Gosavi explained that the state board currently allows students who score low marks or fail in the February-March exams to retake them. With the new proposal, exams would start 15 to 20 days earlier.

This shift aims to complete Class 12 exams on time and announce results in the first week of May, while Class 10 results would follow in the second week of May. A supplementary exam would then be held in the last week of June, with results announced soon after. This approach gives students two opportunities to pass.

Every year, around 32 lakh students take Class 10 and Class 12 exams. Splitting these exams into multiple sessions would demand significant time and resources from teachers, staff, and state board officials. Gosavi emphasized that such a time-consuming process could negatively impact academic teaching.

He also pointed out that the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is conducted in two sessions by the National Testing Agency, allowing students two attempts. The State Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell and the National Testing Agency conduct CET exams for degree courses.
