Pune: State Excise Minister Shambhuraj Desai has announced the deployment of additional flying squads from other districts to Pune, aimed at cracking down on illegal activities in the city’s pubs, bars, and hotels. This move follows a series of incidents, including a fatal car crash, which has brought increased scrutiny to these establishments.

Minister Desai stated, “Flying squads have been instructed to carry out surprise checks across Pune and Mumbai. After the Porsche car crash, we sealed 49 places which have not been allowed to reopen. Teams from other districts are being deployed in Pune. The action will continue. We will make sure that all illegal activities related to pubs, bars, and hotels stop.”

Following the sealing of the L3 bar on Fergusson College Road on Sunday, Desai emphasized that excise officials who were negligent in their duties will face consequences. “I have ordered an inquiry to find out the excise officer responsible for this jurisdiction. If found guilty, we will take strict action against the person,” Desai told the media on Monday.

On Monday night, the excise department suspended an inspector and a sub-inspector from the Pune unit for neglecting their duties. This comes as part of a broader effort to enforce compliance and address any lapses in regulatory oversight.

The intensified measures were sparked by the Porsche car crash on May 19, which resulted in the deaths of two tech professionals. In the aftermath, Pune police, the state excise department, and the civic administration have taken stringent actions against several establishments for violating norms.

Additionally, the excise department has issued notices to all pubs, bars, and liquor shops, holding them accountable for any crimes committed by minors or individuals without a liquor permit after consuming or purchasing alcohol on their premises.

This enhanced surveillance and enforcement effort underscores the commitment of the state excise department to curb illegal activities and ensure compliance with regulations in Pune’s nightlife scene.
