Facing a challenging period with fewer releases and declining occupancy, theatres are offering discounted movie tickets in an effort to boost sales.

Multiplexes and single screens have united to offer Rs 99 movie tickets on May 31, celebrated as Cinema Lovers Day across major chains like PVR Inox, Cinepolis India, Miraj Cinemas, Multa A2, and MovieMax. “This initiative spans 4,000 screens with tickets at Rs 99, excluding premium formats like recliners, though 90-95 percent of seats will be available at this price. Many single screens, especially in the South, will offer tickets for even less, potentially as low as Rs 70,” said Kamal Gianchandani, head of the Multiplex Association of India (MAI) and CEO of PVR Inox Pictures.

He anticipates this promotion will help kick off the summer holiday season for theatres. “While it’s a one-day event and won’t significantly impact the overall box office, it will provide a boost as we enter the holiday season. With many producers delaying releases due to the elections, a surge in new films is expected starting in June,” Gianchandani explained. “The upcoming months will see a notable increase in film releases, including titles like Kalki 2898 AD and Chandu Champion, rejuvenating the industry.”

Gianchandani also expects higher occupancy on Cinema Lovers Day. “High ticket prices make theatres inaccessible for many families. This initiative makes movies more affordable, especially during the summer when families seek air-conditioned activities. We anticipate 70-80 percent occupancy, with youth making up 50 percent of the audience and families 25-30 percent,” he said.

A similar initiative in 2022, National Cinema Day, saw success with over 6.5 million sales, featuring films like Brahmastra Part One: Shiva and Avatar. This year, successful films like Srikanth and Mad Max, along with Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam movies, will be available on Cinema Lovers Day. New releases like Mr & Mrs Mahi and Chhota Bheem and the Curse of Damyaan will also be screened on May 31.
