Jalgaon: Over a hundred individuals from three villages in Chopda taluka, Jalgaon district, fell ill after consuming panipuris at the weekly market in Kamalgaon village. The affected residents exhibited symptoms such as vomiting and loose motions, leading to their hospitalization at various healthcare facilities, including Chopda Rural Hospital, Adavat Primary Health Centre, and Jalgaon Medical College.

Jalgaon district health officer, Sachin Bhahekar, confirmed that the condition of all patients is now stable, with those feeling better being discharged. Among the affected were six to seven children under the age of five.

Authorities have identified the panipuri vendor, and the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) officials in Jalgaon have collected samples of all ingredients for analysis. Currently, 50 patients are receiving treatment at Chopda Rural Hospital, Adavat Primary Health Centre, and Jalgaon Medical College.

Bhahekar explained that on Monday, villagers from Kamalgaon, Chandsani, Pimpri, and surrounding areas visited the Kamalgaon weekly market. Many consumed panipuri from a kiosk at the market and took some home as takeaways.

From Tuesday morning, individuals began seeking medical attention for symptoms of loose motions and vomiting. “The affected patients initially sought help at Adavat Primary Health Centre, with some being transferred to Chopda Rural Hospital. By Tuesday evening, two patients were shifted to Jalgaon Medical College, and by Wednesday afternoon, 14 more patients were moved there,” Bhahekar said.

Bhahekar also recounted his interaction with a minor boy who claimed to have felt unwell even after eating a dry panipuri. “The ingredients used for preparing panipuri, including the water source, are currently under investigation to determine the cause of the food poisoning among the villagers,” he added.
