A 13-year-old boy, Omkar Ramshankar Gautam, drowned in a quarry in Undri while swimming with his friends. The incident occurred on June 19. As per the police, the deceased was a Std VII student. His body was recovered from the quarry on June 20 (Thursday) after an extensive search by Kondhwa police and city fire brigade personnel.

Omkar, whose parents are daily wage workers, had gone swimming in a quarry with five others from a nearby labour camp. When they realized Omkar was not present, they raised an alarm, drawing attention to the area. The police and fire brigade personnel were summoned to the site, according to a police official.

He further said, “The boy’s parents told the police that Omkar had informed them that he was going out with his friends to play, but did not tell them that he was going for a swim. His parents claimed that their son did not know how to swim.”

He drowned in a 60 ft wide and 12 ft deep quarry and even after an extensive search, firemen and divers were unable to find him. The search was abandoned at 8 pm, but resumed at 6:30 am the next day. The body was found afloat and fished out, and it was handed over to the police. It was later sent to the Sassoon General Hospital for a post-mortem.

Inspector (crime) Mansing Patil said the Sassoon hospital in its advance post-mortem report certified drowning as the cause of the victim’s death. A complaint related to accidental death was registered under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Sameer Shaikh stated that it was very difficult for the team to locate the boy as the water body is full of waste.

Infact for the past few years the residents of the neighbouring societies have been raising the issue of unauthorised dumping of waste and debris, nuisance caused by bikers to the Kondhwa police as well as Pune Municipal Corporation but all the pleas have gone unheard.
