A rickshaw driver stole the ATM card of a blind woman passenger, posing as a helper, and withdrew 15,000 from her account. The incident occurred between May 27 and 28, and a case has been registered in Yerawada police station.

Mefan Rashid Haveliwala (age 45, resident of Maharashtra Housing Board, Yerawada), filed a complaint under IPC 420, 379, 403 against the unknown driver. The investigating officer and police sub-inspector Mahesh Fatangare confirmed that the plaintiff is blind.

On May 27, the woman visited Sassoon Hospital with her mother for a physical examination. After leaving, she called an auto rickshaw to return home. The woman requested her driver to stop near an ATM near Sahyadri Hospital to withdraw money. She removed an ATM card from her purse and shared the PIN with the driver, requesting the accused to withdraw for her.

The accused withdrew money from the complainant’s purse, returning her card. The plaintiff kept the card in her purse. The complainant had no spare cash for the autorickshaw ride home so she went up to fetch cash from the house. In the meanwhile, the rickshaw driver stole the ATM card from the complainant’s purse, hiding it as the PIN was known, took the rickshaw fare and escaped.

In the evening, the woman found her ATM card missing while checking her purse, leading to suspicion and a subsequent investigation. She discovered that 15 thousand rupees had been withdrawn from her account. She reported the incident to her family and filed a complaint with the police. Police sub-inspector Mahesh Fatangare initiated an investigation and contacted the bank to obtain CCTV footage of the ATM centre where the money was withdrawn.
