Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is set to make a crucial decision on Thursday regarding the potential extension of the timeline to complete the Metro-III line’s integrated flyover on University Road. The earlier-decided deadline of August 15 might be pushed to November once again.

The Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (PMRDA) is slated to present the extension proposal during a review meeting with the guardian minister, citing heavy rains and technical challenges that could impede project progress. Despite recent announcements of alternative routes to alleviate traffic congestion at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk and Ganeshkhind Road, commuters continue to face chaos on these stretches. The looming threat of a strong monsoon ahead adds urgency to the situation, making an extension inevitable.

Originally slated for completion by April 2025, the overall Metro-III line project’s timeline faces a potential three-month postponement due to the flyover delay. Recent heavy downpours have exacerbated the situation, leading to inundated construction areas along the stretch.

The PMRDA has sought technical assessments from the Tata Group to gauge the additional time required, which will be included in the extension proposal. City residents, like Priya P, who regularly commutes from Baner to Deccan, express concern over prolonged disruptions caused by the delayed infrastructure, crucial for easing traffic flow at the pivotal Shivajinagar junction.
