Pune: In a tragic incident that took place early Friday morning, a watchman lost his life and more than 40 girl students were rescued after a fire broke out in a five-storey building in Pune’s Shanipar area. The building houses a hostel where the students were staying.

The fire, which started around 1:30 am, was reported by Pune Municipal Corporation’s chief fire officer, Devendra Potphode. According to Potphode, the fire erupted at an accounting academy on the ground floor of the building.

“The fire brigade received a call about the fire in a five-storey building. After our team reached the spot, it was found that the blaze had erupted at an accounting academy on the ground floor,” Potphode said.

Forty-two girl students living in the hostel on the second floor were evacuated safely. Potphode noted that the local residents had already begun evacuating the students by the time the fire brigade arrived on the scene.

While extinguishing the fire on the ground floor, the fire brigade team found a man in his early 40s dead, apparently from burn injuries. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) Sandip Singh Gill identified the deceased as the watchman of the building. He was found in a room on the ground floor and was declared dead at Sassoon General Hospital.

However, no further casualty or injuries have been reported so far. The cause of the fire remains unclear and an investigation is underway.
