Pune: Four State Institutions Make QS World University Rankings 2025 Top 1000

Four institutions from the state have made it to the top 1000 in the globally prestigious QS World University Rankings 2025. Among them, IIT Mumbai, Savitribai Phule Pune University, and the University of Mumbai have improved their positions from last year.

The rankings were announced by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). Higher education institutions were evaluated on criteria such as employer reputation, academic reputation, student ratio, international students, employment outcomes, sustainability, and international research.


Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) secured the first position globally. Imperial College London is in second place, while Oxford University is in third. Two Indian institutions, IIT Mumbai and IIT Delhi, have made it to the top 150. IIT Mumbai, which was ranked 149th in the 2024 rankings, has now secured the 118th position. IIT Delhi is ranked 150th.

Bangalore’s Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is ranked 211th. IIT Madras is 227th, IIT Kanpur 263rd, and Delhi University 328th.
Among state institutions, IIT Mumbai leads the list. Savitribai Phule Pune University has shown significant improvement, moving from the 711-720 group in 2024 to the 631-640 group in 2025. Symbiosis International University is ranked in the 641-650 group. The University of Mumbai, previously in the 751-760 group, has improved its standing to the 711-720 group.

This improvement reflects the state’s commitment to enhancing the quality of higher education. The achievements of these institutions highlight their efforts in academic excellence, research, and international collaboration.
