A 28-year-old pregnant woman residing in Erandwane, Pune has tested positive for Zika virus, reported Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Medical Officer of Health at Pune Municipal Corporation. Despite showing no symptoms, Zika virus poses risks such as microcephaly and birth defects in the baby’s brain, as highlighted by the US-based Centre for Disease Control.

Due to the gravity of these risks, health authorities have heightened surveillance in Erandwane and Mundhwa areas, where previous Zika cases were identified. The woman, currently in her sixth month of pregnancy, is under close monitoring and regularly consulting with her obstetrician. An ultrasound conducted in late May indicated normal fetal growth, reassuring health officials.

In response to the situation, samples from three pregnant women in Erandwane were tested; two yielded negative results, while three more samples are pending. The infected woman resided near the index patient’s home, prompting localized anti-larval measures and intensified awareness campaigns. These efforts aim to prevent water accumulation in potential breeding sites like air conditioners and indoor water fountains.

The Pune health department has issued directives to private healthcare providers, urging them to promptly report cases of vector-borne diseases. Similar instructions have been extended to private labs and diagnostics centres. PMC has initiated special drives to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds in the affected areas, emphasizing community-wide preventive measures.

As efforts continue to contain the Zika outbreak, health officials remain vigilant, focusing on early detection, monitoring of pregnant women, and public awareness to curb the spread of the virus in Pune
