New Cancer Hospital Will Soon Be Constructed Near Sassoon General Hospital: Minister Hasan Mushrif Confirms Plot Acquisition

Pune: A new cancer hospital is set to be established near Sassoon General Hospital. The plot required for its construction has now handed over to the ministry, announced Hasan Mushrif, the Medical Education Minister, in the assembly on Thursday.

“We have received a plot owned by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited (MSRDC). We have planned to build the cancer hospital there,” Mushrif stated.

This announcement comes amidst criticism from opposition MLAs from Pune. The opposition had raised concerns about the shortage of drugs, repeated illegal incidents and inadequate patient care at Sassoon Hospital.

In response, Mushrif assured that a detailed discussion regarding these issues will take place on Tuesday. He confirmed plans to visit the hospital along with other MLAs.

He also emphasized his commitment to addressing any drug shortages promptly, stating, “If anyone faces any shortage of drugs, they can give me a call and the dean would be immediately suspended. I also welcome the MLAs from Pune to accompany me on a visit to the hospital where I can show them how well it is being managed.”

The proposal for a dedicated cancer facility in Pune city has been pending since 2016. At that time, Dr. Ajay Chandanwale, then Sassoon Dean, had announced the acquisition of the plot for this purpose. Dr. Yallapa Jadhav, Medical Superintendent has confirmed that the MSRDC plot is located close to the hospital premises near Vishnu Sadashiv quarters and spans approximately 2.19 acres. He recalled inspecting the plot with Chandanwale during his tenure as dean.

In 2016, Chandanwale had also mentioned that the cancer hospital would have 300 beds. The proposed budget being Rs 300 crore for its development.

This new development brings hope for enhanced cancer treatment facilities in Pune, promising better healthcare infrastructure for the region.
