The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out a significant operation on Thursday, clearing encroachments at the chaupati near Junglee Maharaj Temple on J M Road. The chaupati, known as J M Corner, was developed on land previously occupied by an old petrol pump, now hosting numerous hotels and snack centers.

Sunil Kadam, PMC’s deputy engineer, supervised the operation which utilized heavy machinery including a JCB, two gas cutters, and a team of workers to clear the 3,400 square feet plot. The action targeted 20 establishments in the area.

This move follows a recent decision by the Bombay High Court to lift the stay on encroachments along the river at Karvenagar. In response, PMC launched a special drive resulting in the demolition of illegal structures on Thursday.

The operation highlights PMC’s commitment to reclaiming public land and ensuring adherence to legal norms. Encroachments, especially those impacting public spaces and safety, continue to be a focal point of civic administration’s efforts in Pune.

The demolition drive has received mixed reactions from local businesses and residents, highlighting ongoing debates over urban development and regulatory enforcement in the city.
