Ashish Yerekar has been appointed as the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), replacing Sanjay Kolte. This change marks Yerekar as the third CMD within a year at PMPML, highlighting the frequent turnover in leadership positions.  Typically, IAS officers are expected to serve a three-year term in such roles, but transfers before completing this tenure are not uncommon. Yerekar steps into his new role amidst the ongoing challenges and opportunities within Pune’s public transport system.

The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) plays a crucial role in managing the city’s bus services, catering to millions of commuters daily. Leadership changes like this can impact strategic initiatives and operational stability within the organization.

Yerekar’s appointment comes at a time when PMPML is striving to enhance its services, improve infrastructure, and address commuter needs effectively. His tenure will be closely watched to see how he navigates these responsibilities and drives positive changes in Pune’s public transport landscape.

As Pune continues to grow, efficient and reliable public transportation remains essential for its residents. Yerekar’s leadership will play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of PMPML, aiming to provide better connectivity and service quality to the people of Pune.

Vivek Velankar, Pune based civic activist, criticised the state government’s decision. He said, “Within a year, Yerekar is the third CMD of the PMPML. This shows the government’s apathy towards public transport,” he added.
