Pune, 22 May 2024: The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) is set to deliver a crucial decision today regarding the case of the 17-year-old son of a prominent city builder, involved in a fatal Porsche accident that resulted in the deaths of two IT professionals in Kalyaninagar.

The Pune city police have submitted a review application against the JJB’s initial decision on May 19 to grant bail to the teenager. Investigating officer and ACP (Khadki division) Aarti Bansode filed the plea under Section 104 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act, urging the board to try the teen as an adult due to the severe nature of the crime.

The sessions court had previously instructed the police to seek a review from the JJB before further proceedings. The review plea was subsequently presented before a three-member bench of the JJB, led by a principal magistrate.

Additional Commissioner of Police (East region) Manoj Patil provided evidence, including CCTV footage and photographs, showing the teenager driving at high speed after consuming alcohol at two pubs. “The minor admitted to drinking alcohol when first produced before the JJBā€™s single-member bench on Sunday,” Patil stated.

The police have argued that the teen should be sent to an observation home and treated as an adult due to the heinous nature of the offense. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Vijay Magar emphasized the seriousness of the crime, noting, “The teenager is over 16 years old and fully aware of the consequences of his actions. The boardā€™s single-member decision to grant bail and impose conditions instead of referring him to an observation home is both illegal and improper.”

The board has heard arguments from both parties and will issue its decision later today, determining whether the young driver will face trial as an adult.
