Pune witnessed its first FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in the jurisdictions of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerates at 3 AM on Monday, with the Hinjawadi police station in Pimpri Chinchwad. A case was registered for rash driving and endangering life and safety of others.

The FIR at Hinjawadi was filed under sections 125 (b) and 281 of the BNS. Approximately an hour later, the Warje Malwadi police in Pune registered their first FIR under the new law at 4:03 AM. This case involved an assault on Warje resident, who was attacked by three men with a sharp weapon and a cement block around 12:40 AM near Canal Road in Warje.

The Warje incident led to a case under sections 118 (2), 115 (2), 352, and 3 (5) of the BNS, covering charges of causing grievous hurt, assault, intentional insult, and common intention. By 7 PM, four FIRs had been registered under the new law in Pune.

Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis announced in the state assembly that Maharashtra’s first FIR under BNS was registered by the Sawantwadi police in Sindhudurg district at 2:19 AM on the same day. However, details of that case were not disclosed.

The implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad marks a new chapter in the region’s law enforcement, aiming to address and mitigate crime more effectively.
