Pune- A 65-year-old resident of Bopodi near Bhau Patil Road was duped Rs 7.63 lakh by cyber crooks in an MSEDCL bill fraud on February 18. The case was registered at Khadki police station on Tuesday.

As stated by Senior Inspector Pratap Dighavkar, the victim who ran an engineering machinery business, received a call on February 19 where the caller mentioned that his firm’s power supply would be cut off if the MSEDCL bill remained unpaid. Shortly, the victim was asked to pay the bill via the ‘Mahavitaran’ application link sent by the caller as the victim’s details were not accessible on their system. Following the instructions, the victim downloaded the app and created a new login.

The crook initially asked the victim to transfer Rs 100 online to ensure the transactions were functioning smoothly. As soon as the first transaction was done, the crook lured him to transfer more funds by saying the money was not reflected in their account. The crooks continued their demands even after the complainant had completed as many as ten transactions. The latter finally realized he had been tricked and promptly filed a complaint with the cybercrime police. An FIR was registered with the Khadki police and further investigation is being carried out.

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Corporation Limited (MSEDCL) has warned customers of fraudulent messages and calls regarding disconnection of power supply. It has been advised to ignore such calls and not click on any links sent by unknown numbers to ensure protection from financial fraud.
