After a brief lull, Pune is gearing up for a spell of heavy rainfall as the Arabian branch of the southwest monsoon is set to revive from June 22 onwards. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted above-normal rainfall for the city in June.

“Rainfall activity is expected to pick up significantly from June 23 onwards in Pune. The ghat areas will likely experience increased rainfall between June 23 and 25, followed by substantial showers in the city starting June 25,” said KS Hosalikar, head of Climate Research and Services at IMD Pune.

The IMD predicts good rainfall across Konkan, Central Maharashtra, and Marathwada regions from June 22 onwards.

Maharashtra has already received normal-category rainfall with 105 mm recorded between June 1 and June 18, slightly above the expected 102.3 mm for this period.

“Marathwada and Central Maharashtra have received excess to large amounts of rainfall, while Konkan and Vidarbha still face some rainfall deficiency,” noted IMD officials.

Pre-monsoon and early monsoon showers have brought relief, especially to Central Maharashtra and Marathwada, which saw moderate to heavy rainfall from June 1 to June 15.

Marathwada has seen the highest rainfall so far, with 122 mm recorded against the normal 75 mm for June, marking a 63% surplus falling under the ‘Large excess’ category.

Similarly, Central Maharashtra, including Pune district, recorded 108.5 mm of rainfall, 31% above normal, categorized as ‘excess’ rainfall.

In contrast, Konkan and Goa are experiencing a 25% rainfall deficiency with 246.5 mm, while Vidarbha is at a 30% deficit with 55.7 mm of rainfall.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Pune city from June 19 to 22, forecasting light to moderate rainfall in the city and moderate showers in isolated ghat areas.

El Nino, which caused severe heat earlier this year, has dissipated and no longer influences Indian weather patterns, confirmed KS Hosalikar. However, La Nina conditions expected by late July or early August in the Pacific Ocean could enhance this year’s monsoon season.

As Pune braces for increased rainfall, residents and authorities are preparing for the anticipated weather change and its potential impact on the region.
