Pune- The widening work of the Katraj-Kondhwa road had slowed considerably during the Lok Sabha elections. The Pune Municipal Corporation’s Road department has now gathered speed to complete the land acquisition process for the same. The road expansion work had been scaled down to 50 meters instead of 84 meters which led to an expenditure calculated at Rs 280 crore. Due to this, PMC had reached out to the state government for financial support of Rs 200 crore. The state government sanctioned Rs 140 crore during a cabinet meeting instead and the receipt of the amount was delayed as well.

However, now that amount will be received immediately and the road widening work along with land acquisition will speed up. The road has already been inspected by the road department officials of PMC.

“The Katraj-Kondhwa Road has been under construction for a while as sufficient land has not been acquired. Even now, the situation persists but we are putting in consistent efforts to gain plots. We are looking at FSI (Floor Space Index), TDR (Transfer of Development Rights), and financial transactions to get sufficient land to continue the project. Under this project, there are two grid separators. The separator at Shatrunjaya Mandir Chowk has been 80% completed while the other one at Khadim Chowk is 15% completed”, stated Sahebrao Dandge, superintendent engineer of the Road Department.

The length of the flyover coming from Katraj Chowk will be increased and taken to Gokulnagar Chowk. However, this length is meeting denial from the National Highways Department. The land in front of Rajas Society Chowk has not been acquired which makes it impossible to land the flyover there. Efforts are being made to take over land with a minimum impact on traffic conditions.

This project includes four bridges, one underpass, and two grid separators along with a pedestrian crossing. The separators are expected to be completed within the next month. Inspections near the Mauli Chowk underpass are taking place in a manner that will not affect the traffic planning. The completion of the project is important for smooth traffic flow in South Pune. The heavy traffic congestion on Katraj-Kondhwa road has prompted the road expansion project in order to ease traffic.
