The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) laid off 115 employees on June 28, 2024, but on Sunday, they announced they would stop the termination of 55 faculty members and 60 non-teaching staff. This decision came after Ratan Tata’s Tata Education Trust (TET) agreed to provide financial help.

TISS explained, “Ongoing discussions with Tata Education Trust have ensured commitment towards resolving this issue. TET has pledged to release funds for the salaries of project, programme faculty, and non-teaching staff.” The institute asked the employees to keep working, and they will get their salaries once TISS receives the TET Support Grant. Before this announcement, TISS had to lay off employees because they did not have enough grants from TET to pay their salaries.

The administration had been trying for six months to get continued funding from TET but was struggling to keep things running without the funds.

The laid-off employees were working on projects funded by TET, while permanent faculty at TISS are supported by the University Grants Commission (UGC). TISS was originally called the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work when it was founded in 1936. It was renamed Tata Institute of Social Sciences in 1944 and became a Deemed University in 1964 under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
