In the past month, Pune has witnessed a surge in road accidents, continuing despite the recent high-profile Porsche incident in Kalyani Nagar. According to police records, over 75 accidents occurred in the last 28 days alone, resulting in 33 fatalities. Moreover, between May 19 and June 17, more than 60 individuals sustained injuries of varying degrees due to these accidents.

The areas most affected include Hadapsar, Bharti Vidyapeeth, and Kondhwa, as reported by the police department. Shockingly, in several incidents, drivers fled the scene of the accident, while in others, drivers were found to be intoxicated.

Following an alarming incident involving a minor driving under the influence on May 19, Pune Police’s Traffic Branch intensified its ‘Drunk and Drive’ operations. Between May 21 and June 17, a total of 862 individuals were apprehended across the city for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The authorities are deeply concerned about the rising number of accidents and have vowed to enhance enforcement measures to curb reckless driving and ensure road safety. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, adhere to traffic regulations, and report any instances of dangerous driving to the authorities promptly.

The recent spate of accidents highlights the need for continuous awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent further tragedies on Pune’s roads. As the city grapples with this concerning trend, efforts to improve road safety remain a top priority for both the police and local administration.

There are several reasons residents attributed such as poor control of traffic police on speeding vehicles, poor road infrastructure, poor lighting on the road, drink and drive, minors driving at high speed, lack of discipline, etc.
