Solinas’ Robotics Unveil Critical Issues in Water Supply Systems

July 1, 2024

Nithin Kamath, CEO of Zerodha, has sparked widespread concern with a revealing video showcasing the deteriorating state of drinking water infrastructure in India. Posted on June 25, 2024, the video depicts the interior of water pipes. The pictures show drinking water pipes coated with layers of greenish-brown grime, possibly indicating sewage contamination.

The footage is captured by robots developed by Solinas, a Chennai-based startup. The footage underscores critical issues in water supply systems that often go unnoticed. Kamath’s caption, “This is how we get our drinking water,” has prompted a national conversation on the urgent need for improved water infrastructure.

Solinas’ robots, such as the Endobot, are equipped with high-resolution cameras and sensors. They are capable of navigating pipes ranging from 90mm to 1500mm in diameter. These advanced technologies detect leaks, illegal connections, and contamination early, facilitating timely intervention and maintenance. Implemented in over 30 cities, Solinas’ innovations have improved water quality for over 100,000 households and significantly reduced water loss.

Kamath’s partnership with Solinas through Rainmatter, a venture capital firm focusing on sustainable solutions, aims to leverage robotics and AI. This is equipped to address water leakage and contamination effectively. Their collaborative efforts seek to eliminate manual scavenging practices and set ambitious goals to transform India’s WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) sector.
