Mesmerizing footage of elephants navigating through deep waters amidst rising river levels; flood warnings in Assam.

24 June 2024

In a mesmerizing display of natural prowess, a herd of elephants was captured on camera swimming across the Brahmaputra River in Assam’s Jorhat district. Photographer Sachin Bharali documented the breathtaking scene at Nimati Ghat, one of Assam’s primary river ports, where the elephants navigated through the deep waters, their heads barely visible above the surface.

The viral footage, initially shared on Instagram, has captivated viewers worldwide, accumulating over 1 million views and sparking a range of reactions on social media. The elephants’ ability to swim and traverse deep waters challenges conventional perceptions of their capabilities.

The Brahmaputra River’s water levels have surged recently due to heavy rainfall in Assam, posing flood risks across the region. As of June 15, water levels at Jorhat district were recorded at 84.70 meters, surpassing the warning threshold of 84.54 meters. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued severe to extremely heavy rain alerts for Assam until June 23, with districts like Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baxa, Goalpara, Sonitpur, and Bishwanath under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall.

Sachin Bharali’s footage not only captures a unique wildlife moment but also underscores the ongoing environmental challenges faced by both humans and animals in the region.
